We Are a MWBE Certified Company
We are proud to announce that we are a MWBE-certified company in New York City. For those unfamiliar, those initials stand for Minority-Owned Business Enterprise, which is more or less what it sounds like.
What Does This Mean?
Such certification programs exist throughout the United States. However, their exact form can see enormous variation from place to place. Sometimes, these programs are handled by the states or territories. Other times, they are the initiatives of municipal governments. Whatever the case, MWBE certification programs and their counterparts exist to give stakeholders insight into the ownership of small businesses.
We have been MWBE-certified in New York and New York City. That means our operations are majority-owned and operated by people who meet one of two potential criteria. One, they fall into the relevant ethnicities, meaning either Black, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific, Asian-Indian, or Native American. Two, they are women.
Besides this, MWBE certification is meant to help small businesses. As such, owner-operators aren’t allowed to have more than $15 million in net worth after deductions have been made. Those curious should know there are sharp limits to what deductions are and aren’t allowed. First, there is their primary residence. Second, there is their ownership stake in the business itself. Third, there is their ownership stake in a holding company that does nothing but lease certain long-term assets to the business itself. Fourth, there are their retirement savings plans, though there is a cap of $750,000 on these savings. On top of this, the small businesses that apply for certification aren’t allowed to have more than 300 employees.
MWBE certification isn’t handed out without a thorough check. Interested parties are required to submit a long list of documents. Thanks to this, stakeholders can have confidence in the veracity of MWBE certification.
